I am new to the guitar and wanted to get up to speed as quickly as possible by learning the fretboard and the relationship of notes and scales up and down the neck. I am often impatient with mundane workbooks of any kind, but so far, the time investment in this book has been worth it.

from a purely academic perspective, a guitarist would have a hard time doing better than this bk. like building a wall brick by brick, every chapter adds to the last, re-enforcing the previous lessons as they are applied to new ones. this allows one to build a strong foundation from which to expand understanding of the mechanics of guitar theory and how to apply that info in a functional way.

I have been fascinated by the guitar for over 20 years. As such, I have built up a large library of lessons in various forms. This workbook has pulled many concepts that I have found in disparate sources and coalesced them into one place. My only slight criticism is that the basic music theory involved with learning the fretboard is not in as much depth as I would like. I have an entire bookcase full of music theory books and how to play the guitar. Not one of them has approached the topic like this book does. I would not recommend this book for beginners who don't have a teacher or mentor. Sort of like trying to visualize driving a car by looking at the mechanical pieces. You need a foundation for it to really start turning the gears (IMHO).
