Amazon.com: There's no reason an Englishman shouldn't take on a landmark in Latin American literature. Four Weddings and a Funeral, after all, proves Mike Newell has a feel for romance. Adapted by The Pianist's Ronald Harwood, Love in the Time of Cholera is an epic vision of true love. For all the talent involved, however, this lush realization of the Gabriel García Márquez novel never takes flight. Newell begins with a death before backtracking 50 year to the late-1800s, with Florentino (Unax Ugalde), a poetry-writing telegraph operator living in an unnamed city (the movie was filmed in Cartagena, Columbia) who spots the graceful Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) while making his rounds, and that's it--he's in love. While Florentino's mother (Central Station's Fernanda Montenegro) encourages the courtship, Fermina's father (John Leguizamo in over-the-top mode) forbids it. Years pass, and the well-born Dr. Urbino (Benjamin Bratt) treats Fermina for a case of cholera. Then, Urbino proposes. Fermina accepts. A distraught Florentino (now played by Javier Bardem) decides to wait. With the help of his uncle (a sprightly Hector Elizondo), he amasses wealth of his own. All the while, he drifts from woman to woman. After five decades of waiting, he gets a second chance to win Fermina's heart, and it's easier said than done. Florentino's journey is absorbing, but Newell's film lacks the passion and complexity of Marquez's prose. The actors give it their all, but Love in the Time of Cholera is more of a pleasant diversion than a life-changing experience. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The unexpected, the insanity of love
which can be an eternity of torment for a very few.

2.5 stars. For years I've heard of the this wonderful book, but given the long list of books on my table I opted instead to watch the movie. BIG mistake. There are lines in this movie so corny I can't stop wincing at the screen. I never bond with the two main characters and never experience the longing I'm supposed to have for these two to finally come together. For some reason I don't think that it's the actor's fault. More the screenplay and the direction. Oh well, I guess there's always ... Read More

This movie was too long and somewhat boring. It has charm and some beautiful secenes but as a whole the work is disappointing. I purchased the movie and watched it once and may never watch it again. The story is good, but it just dosent manifest well on the screen. I would recommend that you watch it but rent it first rather than buy. If you like it then you buy it. I am glad its in my collection, but I may not watch it anymore.

The movie has a great story line but some of the acting is a little unbelievable. In a perfect world I would remake it, cast my own script, rewrite some of the lines, and add more drama. Enjoyable enough but not a movie I would want to see more than once a year.

I had high expectations about this movie before I saw it. It was in my favorite movies of all time collection, with The Notebook as comparison, as one of those tear-jerker love stories. And then, I saw the movie on a cold and supposedly romantic evening and all of my expectations went to waste. The movie in general was like a soft porn. The love story yet supposed to be spanning a lifetime, just dragged forever in circles. When the movie ended, I wanted to toss the dvd and never see it again.
