Pinter's device turns what could have been a drama of simple adultery into a genuinely harrowing, vividly compelling look at the initial ecstasy and leads people into lovelessness. He brings out the complexities of their relationships - and the deceptions which run through them. The result is a provocative, hypnotic movie that one noted reviewer called "a miracle."
