Once it is attached, just place a marshmallow, hotdog, or whatever you want to cook on the prongs. Once you are done, place the prongs back in the protective cover, and the mess is contained.

This is a cool little item that you don't need, you could just use a sharp stick and have the same thing. If you're out backpacking and want to be an outdoor gourmet and impress your friends then get this light .6oz fire fork. It takes a little time to find the right size stick to to use with this, but when you do the fork is very secure on it.
