This unit is not worth the money.........The overlays that you can select are horrible and would keep one awake ! Even with the straight sound, there are mild intrusive overlays that creep in (they come and go in a consistant manner so must be built into the program) I think I'll try Hammacher Schlemmer next since this Marpac doesn't cut it!

The Marsona is an excellent idea. It basically allows you to create your own mix of nature/white noise sounds to sleep by. Let me start by saying that I use this product nightly and really enjoy it - but I'm still looking for something better.
Unfortunately, the built in speaker is very poor. I really couldn't get past the bad sound quality when I was trying to sleep. It was like trying to listen to a radio through a fast-food drive-through speaker.

Am unsure whether I'll return this or not.
This device has ~8 background sounds (2 rain, 2 waves, etc). I don't notice the problem with looping mentioned by others. There are ~8 overlay sounds which can be combined with the background noise- mainly various birds. Several of the bird sounds are a little unpleasant; when I first heard the owl I thought one of my kids was hurt.

My wife and I like the sound of the ocean so we run this machine during the daytime as well as night. The digital recordings are very clear and true-to-life. We can play two sounds at once - like sea gulls over the ocean. There is plenty of volume and the controls are intuitive if you're used to digital products. The only drawbacks is that I can sense the repetition in the gull recordings when I'm awake. It's a good product overall if you're an insomniac or have a baby.

I live in NYC with a noisy nightowl neighbor, a busy street downstairs, directly above the A train (which runs all night). Did I mention I'm the lightest sleeper ever? I bought this a month after I moved in (sleep proved impossible), and it totally works! It is loud enough to block out the noisy neighbor's antics, the subway vibrating under the building AND the incessant traffic outside. I love the ocean sound.
