The lord of rings movie trilogy was good, but Peter Jackson stole the best of its ideas from Boorman's Excalibur. This one is absolutely my favorite movie of all times. Not a crowd pleaser, anyway, as much as Jackson's: the problem is, those who have no esoteric knowledge will never come to appreciate Boorman fully. John Boorman is a hard director to pin down. He can do a gritty crime drama like POINT BLANK with Lee Marvin and then he does a film like this! EXCALIBUR is the finest Arthur film of them all. Forget KING ARTHUR, forget FIRST KNIGHT or even CAMELOT, THIS IS THE ONE. A wonderful cast, including a young Helen Murren as Morgana, Nigel Terry as Arthur. This movie presents the Arthur movie in terms of the magic sword legend.
It modifies Vivian into Morgan Le Fey and takes several other liberties with the traditional plot, but it is well written , played and fun to watch!
