Amazon.com: It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

This movie has always held a special place in my heart, and there is no better movie to take with you on a road trip than this here (although there are very few watching any HDDVD's in a moving vehicle, I'm sure). Having owned this on VHS and DVD, I thought it might be silly to repurchase this again. How much improvement could be made? Amazingly, this copy is wonderful. The picture and colors are crisp as can be, the sound of the Trans Am peeling out is uncanny, and I have never enjoyed this ... Read More

Burt Reynolds wasn't always the best judge of character when it came to selecting a film script. He had some great choices (`Deliverance') and then some awful ones. This one is kind of in the middle. It's not a smart comedy by any means, but it does have a campy sort of fun quality to it; and thanks to a star making turn by Sally Field it is at least memorable. It's not going to be a film that you're going to want to watch over and over again, but it's one that you'll want to watch at least once. ... Read More

Anti-establishment late '70s truckin' fun movie. Great flick with truckin', hot rods and CB radio-speak. A magnificant late '70s American movie. Great cast. Burt is perfect, as is Jackie Gleason as the ultimate redneck sheriff. (Jerry Reed is easy to ignore, but SHINED.) Sally Field shined as well. It's easy to see how Burt and Sally hooked up after this one in real life. The chemistry showed in the movie and helped make it real. Very funny. You need to watch it for what it's worth. They were'nt trying ... Read More

"East Bound and Down" is one of the great country songs, and this movie is the greatest road movie ever made, the redneck "Easy Rider," the AMERICAN "Easy Rider" (as Patton said, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser!"), filled with car chases and car wrecks, one babe, a beautifully ridiculous story, the great Jerry Reed at his weary but sarcastic redneck best, and Burt R.'s mustache at its cheesiest. It's the movie those two hippie goofs in "Easy Rider" might have made if they'd taken ... Read More
